Hughes Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox

Since the advent of cinema, every decade has given audiences great movies, but if you check a list of movies from the 1990s, you’ll probably agree that the decade offered more than its fair share. But don’t check that list just yet—let’s test your knowledge first! Do you think you can answer 20 questions about movies of the 1990s?

1: Which ‘90s movie is all about an email romance?

You've Got Mail

Warner Bros

Younger quizzers may not remember this, but most people in the U.S. navigated the internet with America Online in the 1990s. Back then, every time a new email arrived, a man’s voice would say, “You’ve got mail,” inducing excitement and a small endorphin rush. Oddly, the movie You’ve Got Mail was inspired by a 1937 Hungarian play called Perfumerie, by Miklos Laszlo, which was written long before AOL was a thing.

2: What film is all about a smart kid named Kevin McCallister?

Home Alone

Hughes Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox

The McCallister family left young Kevin home alone for the first time in 1990, in Home Alone, and they ran off without him again at the airport in 1992, in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Additional sequels feature other kids, not Kevin, who are similarly abandoned somewhere.

3: Can you arrange these ‘90s Will Smith movies in chronological order?

Independence Day

Twentieth Century Fox, Centropolis Entertainment

Will Smith made these movies in the following order: Made in America (1993), Independence Day (1996), Men in Black (1997), and Wild Wild West (1999). His characters were Tea Cake Walters, Captain Steven Hiller, James Darrell Edwards III/Agent J, and U.S. Army Captain James West, respectively.

4: Do you remember which ‘90s film told the story of a serial killer named Hannibal Lecter?

The Silence of the Lambs

Strong Heart/Demme Production, Orion Pictures

The Silence of the Lambs starred Anthony Hopkins as serial killer Hannibal Lecter. He was intelligent and cultured—and totally terrifying and unhinged. Fava beans and a nice Chianti, anyone?

5: Who said, “I’m the king of the world”?

Jack Dawson in Titanic

Twentieth Century Fox, Paramount Pictures, Lightstorm Entertainment

Leonardo DiCaprio said this line while playing the part of Jack in Titanic. The amazing thing is, director James Cameron came up with the line at the last minute, and DiCaprio was skeptical about saying it. Luckily, he did, so we all have that iconic scene to remember. Titanic was the highest-grossing film of the 1990s.

6: Which movie features its main character interacting with historical footage of famous people?

Forrest Gump

Paramount Pictures

Tom Hanks played the titular character in Forrest Gump. As Forrest passes through the decades, he meets football coach Bear Bryant, Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Richard Nixon, and former Beatle John Lennon. All were cleverly inserted into scenes with Tom Hanks.

7: In which Adam Sandler movie did he play Pip the drummer?

Airheads

Twentieth Century Fox, Island World, Robert Simonds Productions

In Airheads, Adam Sandler played Pip the drummer, Brendan Fraser played Chazz the vocalist and guitarist, and Steve Buscemi played Rex the bassist. Toy Story

Pixar Animation Studios, Walt Disney Pictures, Walt Disney Animation Studios

Toy Story was released by Pixar in 1995. It was Pixar’s first full-length feature, and it was also the world's first full-length computer-animated movie. It was a revolutionary achievement, created by a team of 27 animators. To figure out how to animate the toy soldiers, some animators strapped wooden boards to their feet and tried to move.

10: Which movie asked the horrible question “What’s in the box?”

Se7en

Cecchi Gori Pictures, Juno Pix, New Line Cinema

In the movie Se7en, Brad Pitt’s character asks a question that he does not want the answer to: “What’s in the box?” If you don’t know, we're not going to tell you here. Just be aware that the movie involves the seven deadly sins, and you should watch it if you dare.

11: Which ‘90s movie offers a character the choice between a red pill and a blue pill?

The Matrix

Warner Bros., Village Roadshow Pictures, Groucho Film Partnership

The Matrix is about a dystopian future. Morpheus, played by Laurence Fishburne, offers Neo, played by Keanu Reeves, the choice between a red pill and a blue pill. The red pill brings knowledge, while the blue pill brings peace and ignorance. Choose carefully!

12: Do you remember which ‘90s dark comedy has the infamous woodchipper scene?

Fargo

PolyGram Filmed Entertainment, Working Title Films

The Coen brothers make movies like no others, mixing quirky characters, dark comedy, and extreme violence. They describe Fargo as “a homespun murder story,” and that’s about right. Luckily, police chief Marge Gunderson is smarter than all of the bad guys put together.

13: Which of these movies involves D-Day during World War II?

Saving Private Ryan

Dreamworks Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Amblin Entertainment

Steven Spielberg’s film, Saving Private Ryan, is about a search-and-rescue mission to find Private Ryan, for the sake of his family, after his three brothers were killed in action. Captain John H. Miller, played by Tom Hanks, leads the mission to find Ryan, played by Matt Damon. The D-Day scenes were shot in Ireland.

14: Do you know which ‘90s movie has two Lindsay Lohans?

The Parent Trap

Cinema Vehicle Services, The Meyers/Shyer Company, Walt Disney Pictures

The 1998 version of The Parent Trap features two Lindsay Lohans. The actress played twins Hallie Parker and Annie James, who were separated when their parents divorced. It’s a remake of a 1961 film of the same name that starred Hayley Mills as twins Sharon McKendrick and Susan Evers. Both movies were produced by Disney.

15: Which of these Robin Williams movies was released in the ‘90s?

Mrs. Doubtfire

Twentieth Century Fox, Blue Wolf Productions

Of the four choices here, only Mrs. Doubtfire was released in the ‘90s—in 1993. Other ‘90s Robin Williams movies include Hook, Aladdin, Jumanji, The Birdcage, and Good Will Hunting. The man made so many good movies!

16: Can you guess which ‘90s movie was first developed as part of an application to film school?

Groundhog Day

Columbia Pictures

In the movie Groundhog Day, Bill Murray’s character is a TV weatherman named Phil Conners. He repeatedly wakes up on February 2—which happens to be Groundhog Day. 18: Which of these ‘90s movies does NOT star Leonardo DiCaprio?

The Bodyguard

Kasdan Pictures, Tig Productions, Warner Bros

The Bodyguard stars Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, with no appearance by Leonardo DiCaprio. By the way, if you’ve never seen DiCaprio and Johnny Depp in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, you’re in for an exceptional dramatic experience.

19: Do you know which ‘90s movie is loosely based on the Jane Austen novel Emma?

Clueless

Paramount Pictures

Yes, Clueless is loosely based on the novel Emma, which was published back in 1815. However, Jane Austen never wrote dialogue like “Searching for a boy in high school is as useless as searching for meaning in a Pauly Shore movie” or “Do you prefer ‘fashion victim’ or ‘ensemble-ly challenged’?”

20: Do you remember which ‘90s film features a super-famous dance scene with the Chuck Berry song You Never Can Tell?

Pulp Fiction

Miramax, A Band Apart, Jersey Films

In 1994’s Pulp Fiction, Uma Thurman and John Travolta famously dance the Twist to Chuck Berry’s song You Never Can Tell. They’re in a dance contest, but we don’t get to see the other competitors, and we don't need to. Travolta, you may remember, was in another iconic dance scene back in 1997, in Saturday Night Fever.
